Winery: Ascension
Flora is a grape variety bred in the 1940’s by Harold Olmo (possibly one of the most influential viticulturalist in the winemaking world) as an aromatic variety that would still produce great aromatic characters in hot growing conditions.
A light, pale straw colour. Aromas of fruit, floral and sweet spice: tropical fruit: lychees /pineapple/guava. Floral aromatics: honey suckle. And sweet cake spice: cinnamon. On the palate the flavours are pear drops, spice (like a cinnamon shortbread). The wine is off-dry, the acids are soft and the palate weight is one that is medium bodied with a medium finish that ends on a spicy note. The sweetness is quite subtle and viscous, not cloying (due to the acids) and the wine has a delicious balance of sweetness, acidity and lingering tropical fruits and cake spice flavours.
