Winery: Saltings Estate
Established in 2003, the vineyard, three and a half acres, is planted with Syrah, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc grapes. This is another Matakana vineyard where meticulous attention to the detail involves many manual practices (like leaf plucking, shoot and fruit thinning all the way through to hand harvesting). Possibly one of the most interesting things about Saltings Estate is their practice of the biodynamic principles of viticulture.
Terry doesn’t use any chemical pesticides, herbicides, fungicides or fertilizers on his vineyard, he employs the biodynamic principles, an interesting form of viticulture and certainly not the easiest way of growing grapes!
